VERB Promoting Physical Activity

The aztec Boys & Girls Club and VERB teamed up this month in honor of promoting physical activity among young people. VERB, a program for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, travel around the country bringing activities to kids that they may not have had the opportunity to ever do before. Members of the Club participated in activities such as a climbing wall, slam dunk basketball hoops and zip line. In addition, VERB kicked off their Yellowball program where all members received a yellow 'kickball' that they must pass along to other kids their age. This program is to get kids to 'pass along' among themselves, ultimately getting them physically active and off the couch. This is an impressive program that is extremely popular among kids nationwide. We would like to thank the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for sponsoring such a wonderful program and all members of the VERB Crew for coming out for a great day of fun and play!

Cheerleading Clinic at the Aztec Boys & Girls Club

The Aztec Boys & Girls Club would like to thank the Aztec High School Cheerleaders for sponsoring a cheerleading clinic at the Aztec Boys & Girls Club. Cheerleaders Lacey N. and Davina P. donated their time and skill this summer with members from the Club during the first week of Summer Program. Members were taught a dance routine and cheer and performed the last day of the clinic. The girls had a blast and were so thrilled to learn from Aztec's State Champion Cheerleaders. Thanks again Lacey and Davina.

JC Penney Afterschool Fund Sponsors Power Hour in the Aztec Boys & Girls Club

The JC Penney Afterschool Fund is awarding The Aztec Boys & Girls Club a $5,000 grant to support Power Hour, an innovative afterschool tutoring program designed to teach vital homework skills to local youth. The Aztec Boys & Girls Club launched Power Hour in 2003 at the Main Club. The grant will support expansion of the program to the Aztec Teen Center.

Power Hour is an interactive homework assistance program offered during afterschool hours for children ages 6-18. The program helps young people appreciate homework as a time to work independently and feel good about their accomplishments. Students can also receive tutoring as necessary,. Studies have shown that quality afterschool programs result in lasting, life-changing lessons to include improved social skills and increased academic performance and attitude towards learning.

In the continuing effort to ensure every child has access to an afterschool program, the JC Penney Afterschool Fund is giving $875,000 nationally in support of Power Hour. This is part of their $2.2 million total contribution to Boys & Girls Clubs of America this year.

"A world of opportunity awaits every child, and Boys & Girls Clubs teach kids to realize those dreams and obtain the skills needed to succeed in life," said Ed Solczak, executive vice president of the JC Penney Afterschool Fund. "We are proud to be affiliated with an organization that is improving so many lives in such a positive and lasting way."

Celebrating Lights On Afterschool

On October 20, 2005, the Aztec Boys & Girls Club hosted a talent show for members celebrating Lights On Afterschool , the nation's largest rally for afterschool programs. Members participated in a series of events from singing to dancing to performing skits and gymnastics. Many parents joined in the celebration by cheering on their child. The nationwide events marked the sixth annual Lights on Afterschool Day, organized by the Alliance with National Presenting Sponsor the JC Penney Afterschool Fund. This year's Lights on Afterschool included thousands of events around the country and at military bases around the world. A giant traveling light bulb and art display crisscrossed the country the weeks leading up to October 20th , with children in 13 cities contributing artwork, essays, poetry and other materials. The Aztec Boys & Girls Club was proud to participate in such a wonderful event in order to celebrate the work being done in our after school programs.
